Tasfreight guide

Tasfreight, a Tasmanian owned carrier since 1984

Tasfreight is the trading name of Tasmanian Freight Services Pty Ltd. It opened at Devonport in May 1984 to carry freight between Tasmania and Melbourne, with Kerry Gibson as the driving force, and its first container that month held chilled fruit and vegetables bound for Devonport. The company describes itself as Tasmanian owned and privately owned, and its head office sits on the Bass Highway at Latrobe.

Tasfreight depots from Devonport and Hobart to Brisbane

Its About page lists seven depots. In Tasmania they are Devonport, Launceston at Western Junction and Hobart at Bridgewater. On the mainland, Tasfreight Melbourne is at Laverton North, with a separate Melbourne Market contact at Epping, Sydney is at Smithfield, Tasfreight Brisbane is at Wacol and Adelaide is at Gillman. It also has a major agency in Perth, Gibson Austwide, at Maddington.

Door to door, both ways across the strait

Tasfreight picks up and delivers door to door throughout Tasmania and the mainland. Its route list runs from Tasmania to the mainland and back, and from Victoria, New South Wales, Queensland, the ACT, South Australia, Western Australia and the Northern Territory to anywhere in Australia. It describes its service as local, statewide and national.

What Tasfreight carries

Fruit and vegetables were the original cargo. Today it caters for all types of cargo except new furniture, and its site also lists hard frozen goods and fine art as freight it does not carry. Chilled loads, produce among them, go by refrigerated transport. Bulk lines run to and from Tasmania, and bulk tank containers on a purpose-built trailer move wine, fuel and feed between the island and the mainland. Enquiries about express freight are handled by its Melbourne office, and storage is available in all depots, with its site directing enquiries to the local branch manager.

Away from transport, Tasfreight builds, sells and repairs timber pallets and fruit and vegetable bins, made to a customer's specification if needed, and leases more than 6,000 vegetable and apple bins around Tasmania. Tasfreight was first certified to ISO 9001 in August 1996, and its current certificate is valid to March 2029.

Tasfreight tracking, quotes and pickups

Tasfreight's site does not offer public tracking: for a proof of delivery it sends you to the delivering depot. Its own Quick Quote form asks for origin and destination towns, postcodes and states, each item's type (carton, skid, pallet, tube, bin, crate, satchel or bag), dimensions and weight, and sales and quote questions go to head office. For its own customers, the Melbourne and Sydney branch pages each name a pickups contact.

Booked through Senditt, a Tasfreight consignment has its label and tracking in your Senditt login, in the same dashboard as freight on other carriers.
